How to Measure Curtains

This guide is for Singapore homeowners with existing curtain rods or tracks and want curtains that look custom-made or want to take a measurement for getting quotes. How To Measure Window for Curtain Rod and Track

Window Width Only

If you want to install window width curtain rods or tracks, you can first measure your window’s width then add 15cm on the either sides of the window to get the width for your rod.

The extended measurement of 15cm on the left and right sides will allow for better and fuller light blockage in the room.

Wall To Wall

If you want to install wall to wall curtains with tracks, measure the full width wall to wall.

If you intend to install curtain rods wall to wall, take the full width measurement and deduct the measurement off the finials.

How to Measure Curtain Drop

Measurement Type A: Standard Width x Floor Drop Height

1. Measure the width of your window and add 15cm to left and right
2. Measure from top of window to 1cm-6cm above the floor
3. Add 15cm to above window frame

By taking some measurements off the floor, it will prevent your curtains from getting worn out when drawing open or close daily.

Measurement Type B: Standard Width x Below Sill Height

1. Measure the width of your window and add 15cm to left and right
2. Measure the height of your window (for length of curtain) + 20cm below windowsill
3. Add 15cm to above window frame

Pro-Tip: Adding the 20cm below windowsill allows light to be blocked out better.

Measurement Type C: Standard Width x Full Height

1. Measure the width of your window and add 15cm to left and right
2. Measure from top of window to 1cm to 6cm above the floor
3. Add 15cm to above window frame

Pro-Tip: Removing 1cm to 6cm from floor would prevent the hems of your curtain from being worn out.

How to Measure Curtain Width (With Existing Rods or Tracks)

The measurement guide below is for homeowners who already have existing curtain rods or tracks.

For Curtain Rods or Poles

Measure the width of the pole that you have without the end caps and you will get the width that is required of your curtains.

For example: Curtain rod is 190cm, your base curtain width is 190cm.

For Curtain Tracks

Measure the full track’s width and you will get the right width you need.

For example: Curtain track is 190cm, your base curtain width is 190cm.

Let the supplier you are working with know and then they will be able to calculate the fabric needed for double pleat (standard pleat) or other pleating styles you need.

How To Get Better Curtain Width Coverage

Measurement for Width of Curtains

Add 2.5cm to the width of your curtains (left + right).

This will ensure full coverage when your curtains are closed and a neat stacking or slight overlap when open.

For Pencil Pleat Curtains and Eyelet Curtains

Double the width of your curtain rod or track to get the correct sized curtain gathering.

Pro Tip: If you only want to get window width curtains, extend the curtain rods 15-20cm each sides beyond the window frame for better light blocking and a well finished look.

How to Measure Curtain Drop (With Existing Rods or Tracks)

Curtain drop is the curtain length from where it is hung to your desired bottom. Measure from left, middle and right of the width and use the longest measurement. This is because there could be uneven floors or ceilings.

Curtain Poles with Ring

Measure from the eye of the ring to the length/height you require.

For pencil pleat or pinch pleat curtains: Measure from the bottom of the ring to the desired drop.

Standard Pleat Tracks

Measure from the top of the track to the length/height you require.

Eyelet Curtain Rod

Measure from the top of the pole to the length/height you require.

Pro tip: For the best looking straight drop curtain, it should be 1-2cm above floor. However, if you want it to fully touch the floor, then take the full drop measurement but note that the curtains will pool on the floor.

How To Get Better Curtain Drop Coverage

Drop coverage will ensure that light blocking will be at its fullest potential and your curtains finishing will look elegant and professional.

Length of Curtains

For length of curtains, make sure your measurements are:

Above Sill: End 1cm above windowsill
Below sill: End 15cm above windowsill
Floor Length: End 1cm above the floor

Pro-Tip: Accuracy of Your Curtain Length

Measure different points (left, right, center) of the room as windowsills and floors might be uneven at time. Use the smallest measurement as your length.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

1. Measuring only the window width
2. Measuring only one area of the room instead of taking 3 point measurements (uneven floor/ceiling)
3. Forgetting to add some measurements to the width creating a flat cheap look
4. Ignoring obstacles like aircon or piping
